Building Regulatory & Risk Foundations into a Digital Lending Platform

Financial ServicesRegulatory StrategyRiskGovernance
Built & Licensed - Deployment-Ready

Building a digital lending platform requires more than a functioning product. Regulatory, privacy, identity, consumer-protection, risk and operational requirements all influence how the platform can operate. For Kajco, these considerations were developed alongside the product and operating model rather than treated as a separate compliance exercise.

The Problem

The challenge was to establish an operating foundation in which Product → Data → Risk → Governance → Operations could work together. That meant considering not only what the product should do, but how information should be handled, participants verified, activities traced and operational risks controlled.

What I Worked On

  • Moneylending Authorisation
  • Digital-Lending Regulatory requirements
  • Data Protection and Privacy
  • Identity Verification
  • Data Governance
  • Compliance Review
  • Auditability and Traceability
  • Operational Controls
  • Fraud and Risk Considerations

Risk & Control Framework

The control environment considers: Customer identity, Merchant identity, Geolocation, Device identification, Transaction traceability, Repayment, Fraud detection, Officer accountability, Audit trails, Reconciliation, Escalation. These controls are intended to make operational activity identifiable, traceable and reviewable rather than simply adding documentation around the product.

Regulatory Thinking as Product Thinking

One of the key lessons from the work is that regulation cannot be separated completely from product design. Identity requirements affect onboarding. Data-protection requirements affect information flows. Audit requirements affect record-keeping. Risk controls affect operational workflows. This means regulatory requirements can shape the product itself rather than simply sitting alongside it.

Designing for Responsible Operations

The merchant model also incorporates performance-sensitive operating structures. Merchant capacity is intended to evolve with portfolio performance rather than remain permanently fixed, creating a link between observed performance and future operating capacity. Detailed commercial terms and proprietary operating mechanics are intentionally not disclosed publicly.

Outcome

Kajco has established a substantial regulatory, governance and operational foundation alongside its product development work - built, reviewed and licensed rather than left as a design exercise. Kajco Lending Services Limited holds approval under the FCCPC Digital Lending Regulations, alongside the additional regulatory and data-protection requirements this space demands. The platform is ready to operate; funding, continued refinement and real-world validation are the remaining stage. I'm open to conversations with investors, partners and collaborators who want to be part of that next stage.
